Essential Killing (making of)

As a part of a Platige Image crew, I will highly recommend watching this Essential Killing making of from Polish Platige Image studio. You can also read a short story about this project below:
We are pleased to inform you that Platige Image has produced special effects for Essential Killing the latest film directed by Jerzy Skolimowski. The film will premiere at the 67th International Film Festival in Venice, which begins on the 1st September. It will be shown as a part of the prestigious competition section of the festival.
Here is a brief look at the making of the film. The most spectacular part of the effects was preparing a special, very rare version of a Black Hawk helicopter (with hellfire missiles attached to its bottom), filling it with crew members and creating a realistic chase sequence that opens the film.
We received the edited material and a lot of freedom to work on the sequence, which gave us a lot of pleasure. The only thigh restricting us was the general outline of the story, the reactions of the actor and the actual explosion that took place on the set. We could experiment in the field of placing and the movements of the helicopter, says Jakub Knapik who supervised the production of the special effects.
The animated Black Hawk was created based on a very detailed model so that it could be shown in close-up. The works on animation were preceded by detailed research into the way the machine behaves, thanks to which we could faithfully recreate its movements. The helicopter was created is such a way that it matched the lighting conditions on the Israeli desert when shooting the film. That required, among other things, generating huge amounts of sand raised by the machine. In effect, the majority of the approximately six-weeks’ time of working on the project was devoted to picture rendering in 4K resolution and to simulations.
The effects were created in cooperation with the screenplay writer and producer of Essential Killing Ewa Piaskowska. Ewa Piaskowska and Jerzy Skolimowski are a creative duet open to new technologies and possibilities presented by digital postproduction and animation. I believe they will use them successfully in their consecutive projects, says Katarzyna Jarzyna, who supervised the production of the special effects.
We wish to thank the director and the production team for cooperation and hope they win the Golden Lions award.
